## What should be the ideal weight?

Most people have tried to lose weight at some point, or at least know someone who wants to lose weight. This is largely due to an “ideal” perception of body weight. Today, IBW is widely used throughout sports, as many sports categorize people by their body weight.

Note that IBW is not a perfect measurement. It does not take into account the percentages of body fat and muscle in a person’s body. ### Age

Theoretically, age shouldn’t be a big determinant after 14-15 for girls and 16-17 for boys, most people stop growing after this age. In fact, males and females are expected to shorten by 3 to 5 cm, respectively, by the age of 70. Formulas differ in the values used based on the research and findings of the scientists involved in their development. The Devine formula is the most commonly used formula for IBW measurement.

### G.J. Hamwi formula (1964)

### B.J. Devine formula (1974)

- Male: 0.3048 over 1,524 meters (5 feet) 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg per meter (1 inch)

Similar to the Hamwi Formula, it was originally designed as a basis for medical dosages based on weight and height. Over time, the formula became a universal determinant of IBW.

## Healthy BMI Range

All formulas and methods have limitations. Because formulas are designed to be applied to as many people as possible, they cannot be highly accurate for each individual. Formulas only affect height and gender, and there are no considerations for body mass ratios known for physical disabilities, people at the extremes of the spectrum, activity levels, or body compositions such as muscle mass.
